Bougainvillea
BOUGAINVILLEA
Native to South America, the Bougainvillea is highly desired as a Bonsai for its vigorous growth and tolerance of pruning, wiring and shaping. Bougainvilleas are known for their blooms with gorgeous trumpet-shaped flowers which grow in clusters of three. They are fast-growing and tolerate pruning very well—the flowers of the Bougainvillea range in colour from yellow, orange, red, pink and purple.
Young Bougainvilleas offered are just getting to the age of bloom and we cannot guarantee what colour the flowers on our Young pre-bonsai will be.
Being sensitive plants, Bougainvilleas will lose flowers during the shipping process, but when kept in warm temps with lots of humidity, they will bloom year-round.
BONSAI CARE
- It loves the full sun and high temperatures for producing flowers. In the winter, the Bougainvillea should not be exposed to temperatures below 10°C.
- Watering: This Bonsai should be watered whenever the soil gets dry. Avoid constant soil wetness to prevent root rot.
- Training: wiring is best recommended on younger shoots and twigs. Older branches should not be wired as they are very stiff and can snap easily.
- Pruning: Pruning is best recommended to be done in the Fall or Winter, after flowering.
- Re-potting: re-pot once every 2-3 years and older ones once every 3-5 years.
